Tang San Cai
Tang San Cai, a gem of ancient Chinese art ,is a kind of handmade glazedware of exquisite craftsmanship created in the Tang dynasty . It was baked in kilns at a temperature of about 900¡ãC , with white Kaolin as body. Lead glass as glaze and mineral oxides as color. It's history goes as far back as 6,000years ago, when people painted in mineral color the primitive glazed pottery with brown ,black and white designs .After a long period of development through the Shang , Zhou , Qin and Han Dynasties , ( 420 - 58 A.D.) a Kind of glazedware in secondary color ,which was the early stage of Tang San Cai ,The Tang Dynasty was the peak of feudal China . Artists then, by applying alternately glaze of many different colors, finally succeeded in making the unique polychrome artware -Tang San Cai. Tang San Cai opened up new visas for, and added brilliant luster to, the pottery craftsmanship. Tang San Cai is a modern name .According to the "Brief History of the Tang Dynasty", however ,the vividly carved figures and horses, which were so popular among the Tang royal family members and officials as funeral objects,are precisely the Tang San Cai .In 1928,when the Longhai Railway was being built ,some glazed camels , horses and figures were excavated form tombs .They were bright in color and lifelike in manner .since the relics discovered then were glazed in three Tri-Colored Glazed-ware . By the time objects glazed in yellow , blue ,black, brown and other colors were discovered ,the name had already been stuck . People have continued to use it ever since without change. Luoyang was the home of tri-colored glazedware of the Tang Dynasty, not merely because it was the place where first discoveries were made , but because it has reliable historic remains and sites bearing proof . In 1975,an ancient kiln was found in the Gong county ,east of Luoyong .This is the only site so far discovered in our country .It provides ample and reliable sources for the study of how the Tang artists made and baked their polychrome pottery. The Gong county was within the jurisdiction of the Tang Dynasty's East Capital-luoyang , so it is not difficult to understand why so many Tang San Cai objects have been unearthed from the city's Tang tombs . The Luoyang polychrome glazedware varies in kinds, among which are articles of daily use in bright color and unique shape, robust and lifelike animals , and figures with various postures and vivid expressions. There are oven and mortar molds as well. Although they were used as molds as well. Although they were used as funeral objects, they nevertheless mirrors much of the Tang society , reflects the rapid progress made by the Tang artists in pottery-making , and demonstrates the Tang people's way of life as well as the dynasty's economic and cultural exchanges with foreign counties . Tan San Cai is not exactly sculpture, but it can be compared favorably with the Buddhist statues in longmen and the colored statues in Dunghuang. Nor is it exactly painting , but it pictures beautifully the rich social life of the Tang dynasty. In Ancient times, Louyang was the home of Tang San Cai. Today, If you go and visit the factory reproducing Tang San Cai, you may well have the impression that, on its native soil, Tang San Cai grows and multiplies rapidly.
