Cai, a gem of ancient Chinese art ,is a kind of
handmade glazedware of exquisite craftsmanship
created in the Tang dynasty . It was baked in
kilns at a temperature of about 900¡ãC , with white
Kaolin as body. Lead glass as glaze and mineral
oxides as color. It's history goes as far back
as 6,000years ago, when people painted in mineral
color the primitive glazed pottery with brown
,black and white designs .After a long period
of development through the Shang , Zhou , Qin
and Han Dynasties , ( 420 - 58 A.D.) a Kind of
glazedware in secondary color ,which was the early
stage of Tang San Cai ,The Tang Dynasty was the
peak of feudal China . Artists then, by applying
alternately glaze of many different colors, finally
succeeded in making the unique polychrome artware
-Tang San Cai. Tang San Cai opened up new visas
for, and added brilliant luster to, the pottery
craftsmanship. Tang San Cai is a modern name .According
to the "Brief History of the Tang Dynasty",
however ,the vividly carved figures and horses,
which were so popular among the Tang royal family
members and officials as funeral objects, are precisely
the Tang San Cai .In 1928,when the Longhai Railway
was being built ,some glazed camels , horses and
figures were excavated form tombs .They were bright
in color and lifelike in manner .since the relics
discovered then were glazed in three Tri-Colored
Glazed-ware . By the time objects glazed in yellow
, blue ,black, brown and other colors were discovered
,the name had already been stuck . People have
continued to use it ever since without change.
Luoyang was the home of tri-colored glazedware
of the Tang Dynasty, not merely because it was
the place where first discoveries were made ,
but because it has reliable historic remains and
sites bearing proof . In 1975,an ancient kiln
was found in the Gong county ,east of Luoyong
.This is the only site so far discovered in our
country .It provides ample and reliable sources
for the study of how the Tang artists made and
baked their polychrome pottery. The Gong county
was within the jurisdiction of the Tang Dynasty's
East Capital-luoyang , so it is not difficult
to understand why so many Tang San Cai objects
have been unearthed from the city's Tang tombs
. The Luoyang polychrome glazedware varies in
kinds, among which are articles of daily use in
bright color and unique shape, robust and lifelike
animals , and figures with various postures and
vivid expressions. There are oven and mortar molds
as well. Although they were used as molds as well.
Although they were used as funeral objects, they
nevertheless mirrors much of the Tang society
, reflects the rapid progress made by the Tang
artists in pottery-making , and demonstrates the
Tang people's way of life as well as the dynasty's
economic and cultural exchanges with foreign counties
. Tan San Cai is not exactly sculpture, but it
can be compared favorably with the Buddhist statues
in longmen and the colored statues in Dunghuang.
Nor is it exactly painting , but it pictures beautifully
the rich social life of the Tang dynasty. In Ancient
times, Louyang was the home of Tang San Cai. Today,
If you go and visit the factory reproducing Tang
San Cai, you may well have the impression that,
on its native soil, Tang San Cai grows and multiplies
rapidly.
